Planning Reference

Reading glasses strength by age

Near vision changes gradually with age, so demand for each power follows the age profile of your customers. The ranges below are commonly cited industry starting points, and they are the demographic logic behind the Younger skew and Older skew presets above.

  • 40 to 44 +0.75 to +1.00
  • 45 to 49 +1.00 to +1.50
  • 50 to 54 +1.50 to +2.00
  • 55 to 59 +2.00 to +2.25
  • 60 to 64 +2.25 to +2.50
  • 65 and over +2.50 to +3.00

Reading this strength chart for assortments: a customer base that skews younger concentrates demand in the upper rows, while an older base shifts it toward the stronger powers. Shape your mix to match, then let real sell through data refine it.

Commonly cited starting points for planning, not personal advice. Individual needs vary, and an eye examination remains the reliable way for a wearer to confirm strength.

Why the mix matters

A reading glasses order is never a single power. Retail demand spreads across a curve, and the shape of that curve depends on where you sell. Pharmacy and drugstore traffic often leans toward stronger powers, while online channels tend to bring in more first time buyers at the lower end. Getting the mix roughly right at the purchase order stage means fewer leftover powers on the shelf and fewer emergency reorders of the ones that sold out.

Start from a preset, drag the sliders until the curve matches what you know about your customers, and use the copy button to paste the exact breakdown into an email or an inquiry. If you already have sell through data from a previous season, let that data override the presets. The presets here are editable starting points, not market statistics.
